  • Introduction of Expressway

Expessway Lighting

The Incheon International Airport Expressway is equipped with road lights In all segments including the main road, bridges (Yeongjong & Banghwa and other small bridges), IC/JCT, Toll Plaza (New Airport Toll Plaza, North Incheon Toll Plaza), and Road Maintenance Office.

Among some Road Lighting Systems, the Pole Lighting Method has been adopted in principle. For the tunnel, the flank-attached Lighting Method has been adopted. Especially, High Mast Pole is adopted on the toll plaza square so that the square can be illuminated at an equal brightness. Source of the light was chosen according to the efficiency, lifetime, color, lighting speed and other particular characteristics that were necessary for the road lights. High Pressure Sodium has been used to improve the compatibility of the products.

The main bridges (Yeongjong & Banghwa Grand Bridges) have been decorated with Seasonal Lighting Effect so that drivers and residents can enjoy the distinctive seasonal beauty of the bridge itself.

Yeongjong Grand Bridge

The main tower of the Yeongjong Grand Bridge is equipped with Metal Halide Lighting System (ave. light 100lux). The front and back of the main tower's lighting contrast has been modified to 68 lux in order to protect drivers from the dazzling lights. Moreover, through such a lighting system, drivers and passengers can appreciate the aesthetics of the main tower.

Lights in the main tower change its color according to the 4 season (Green in spring, White in summer, Yellow in fall, and Red in winter) to enhance the skyline for drivers and the residents of the area surrounding the Incheon International Airport Expressway.

The cable connected to the main tower is also equipped with sectional lighting at each panel point to create the same visual effect on the suspension bridge in the night. The colors vary by season and by time (green in spring, white in summer, yellow in fall, and red in winter). The resulting effect will accentuate the fine architecture of the bridge and main towers.

Banghwa Grand Bridge

The Banghwa Bridge lighting system mixes Metal Halide and Sodium lights to define the smooth silhouette of the Truss Bridge. The lighting changes brightness according to the amount of ambient light in order to maintain economical efficiency. The bridge is fully illuminated from sunset to midnight, but half lit up from midnight to sunrise. To symbolize the expressway as the main link between Seoul and the new airport, the lighting of the Banghwa Grand Bridge was designed that the surface of the river looks like a airport runway, the truss like the body of an airplane, and the piers like its wheels.
